Monster Problems ... the Meta-crisis .... The Human Predicament

Human society is now encountering Monster Problems. These are existential issues which seem impossible to solve. 
Some global "Monster Problems" are. 
  1. Climate crisis ... See: Solving climate change
  2. Overpopulation ... A number of scientists say the carrying capacity of the earth is about 2 billion people but we have many more and we live in a System that encourages exponential growth of population, production and consumption
  3. Worsening "L-curve" distribution of wealth and power
  4. The increased threat of weapons of mass destruction ... i.e. many more kinds of weapons and greater accessibility 
  5. The resurgence of Authoritarianism ...  Many people seeking to shift the global System backward from the Constitutional Republic form (mislabeled "democracy") to the "Dear Leader" form (i.e. from Box to Triangle)
  6. Collective Trauma to our people from wars, poverty, climate events, racism, authoritarian governments, sexism, etc.
  7. Increasing Tragedies of the Commons ... e.g.  Fish resources, fresh water, biodiversity, forests, soil, pollution, trust-levels, etc.
  8. Wars
  9. Pandemics ... e.g. Covid 19, Influenza
  10. Prejudices ... sexism, racism, etc.
  11. The threat of Artificial Intelligence serving its own interests as the expense of humanity
  12. (You name it ...)
Many people recognize that these "Monster Problems" are interconnected. They often express it as the "Meta-crisis."  Or, as Paul Ehrlich and others describe it, the "Human Predicament."  From our standpoint the Human Predicament is that we are trapped in a System that is no longer fits our Situation. So the normal solutions we are familiar with, which are good (e.g educating women, raising consciousness, developing new technologies, electing better leaders, passing better laws) basically address symptoms, not the underlying Human Predicament. While pursuing "normal solutions" is essential, ultimately we must also deal with our System. 

Here's the good news: In addition to all the good works currently underway, a few of us with enough resources and media support, can FACILITATE "all" of us to get involved, think about these problems collaboratively, achieve breakthrough progress on each Monster and spark the necessary System transformation for resolving the Human Predicament. The ToBe Project articulates step-by-step what needs to happen. This transformation offers a great deal more than the prospect of resolving the Monster Problems. It offers a path to the "Good Society," which we might describe as the "Monster Wish." 

If this sounds too good to be true ... Please don't dismiss this exciting development without first seeking to understand. This viewpoint can seem utopian from our current mode of thinking because it relies on is a set of Social Innovations that are not yet part of our modern culture and "common sense." Actually, it's more like we forgot them from pre-modern times, particularly what we call "choice-creating," the age-old "sacred" quality of thinking and talking where our Indigenous ancestors would face their biggest issues together creatively from the heart, knowing that unity was the only possible result.

Our System is working against us

The ToBe Project is a "Holution" to the Human Predicament. 

Brief summary of the ToBe Project

The ToBe Project is eight accessible steps aimed at convening the kind of whole-system conversation we all want to be part of, the kind of commonsense conversation that Indigenous peoples used throughout history, where we all gather to address the Monster Problems and reach unity about what's going on, what we want and what to do ... where the process itself is a kind of solution that it builds and sustains the spirit of "global community." 

The "magic sauce" for convening this kind of conversation is a particular quality of thinking that doesn't have a name ... that we call "Choice-creating." Here is an overview of the eight steps. For more detailed description see The ToBe Project 
  1. Gather "Just Us" and adequate resources
  2. Identify the first Monster Problem to address
  3. Randomly select 12 to 16 people
  4. Use Dynamic Facilitation to reliably evoke the spirit of "choice-creating" in each Wisdom Council
  5. Convene a live "global community" meeting where the Wisdom Council presents the story of its journey & unified conclusions, and where people have the opportunity to visit about the results.
  6. Structure this process of global Wisdom Councils to be ongoing
  7. Provide for the new whole-system conversation to increasingly include everyone
  8. Provide ways for all to learn more about this holistic model of change (i.e. the Wisdom Council Process), especially the mode of thinking (i.e. choice-creating) and our way to reliably evoke it (i.e. Dynamic Facilitation)

Can this "Holution" really work?

We know from experiments and experience with the "Wisdom Council Process"  that it works at large scale. e.g. Two states of Austria have adopted the Wisdom Council Process into their state constitutions. And we also know that it's possible for "Just Us" to set the ToBe Project in motion. Below is a cartoon video that explains a little about how this can work.

So ... Can we save the world?

There is no "We" yet to even try to save the world. But once "Just Us" sets the ToBe Project in motion then there will be an all-inclusive, intelligent "We" to own the Monsters and achieve breakthroughs that we cannot foresee. Many people and organizations are already working to repair the world. And there are efforts to coordinate these various efforts. But all of this activity happens within the existing System, which is the ultimate cause of the Human Predicament and the Monsters. With the ToBe Project in place then we will live in a new System where a wise and responsible "We the People" comes into being (i.e. all of us in unity) as the ultimate authority.

See this link for how this affects climate crisis. Of course, this is just an example. It works similarly for the other Monster Problems. And it helps us respond intelligently to extrinsically caused issues like volcano eruptions and asteroid impacts.
