Democracy in America is collapsing. A new system is emerging, Autocracy, which dispenses with the rule of law, has state-approved media and religion, and a new caste system based on loyalty to the ‘Dear Leader.” It’s bringing even more maldistribution of wealth, a justice department used for retribution, and a loss of individual freedoms as people become afraid to stand up for what’s right. Also, our new autocratic system has no corrective oversight capability. People are scared but feeling stronger by gathering in halls, demonstrating in the streets and going to the courts, but I don’t see these efforts working.
Here's what I think can make the needed difference: Wouldn’t it be great if we, a few of us with a media partner, could convene periodic “times out” where all citizens step back and gather into an ongoing series of “wisdom councils,” just like indigenous peoples did throughout history? And we facilitate this “Wisdom Council Process” so that “all the people” talk respectfully and creatively about the most pressing issues of our day, reaching shared conclusions about the truth of what’s happening and what to do? Of course, this requires a different kind of conversation than normal politics. It’s not debate, dialogue, deliberation or decision-making. It is a heartfelt, creative quality of talking that is age-old but doesn’t have a name. I call it “choice-creating. Obviously, we can’t gather the entire population of the country into a physical room for this conversation. However, using some technical and social innovations we can bring all citizens into one ongoing choice-creating conversation, where a legitimate “We the People” arises to provide wise, responsible leadership to elected leaders, the economy and the culture. Note: just by adding this new conversation to whatever is happening, creates a new system that supersedes the Autocracy, all branches of government and the Constitution. This new system should be called “democracy,” but since that word is already in misuse, we call the new system “Wise Democracy.” At the Center for Wise Democracy, we have been working on a way to convene this national “Wisdom Council Process” in the U.S. for over 30 years. It was described in my 2002 book “Society’s Breakthrough! Releasing Essential Wisdom and Virtue in All the People.” Back then however, we thought only a U.S. Constitutional Amendment could bring about the needed system transformation. But today we know that the 8-step “Wise Democracy Project” can achieve these immense benefits with no identifiable downside. Nor do we need government’s approval or people’s understanding beforehand. But we do need media and funding partners, approximately $10 million. Hopefully, you will explore more about this exciting option and recognize that in addition to normal solution strategies this MUST happen. As a potential media partner we invite you to help turn this scary moment for our country into an opportunity for real democracy. For more information about our experiences with the Wisdom Council Process so far (e.g. Two states of Austria have adopted the process into their constitutions) and how this can really turn things around see https://www.wisedemocracy.org/2-solving-national-issues.html.
