Unlike a top-down model of change. Or a bottom-up model of change. This model of change is facilitative and holistic. The process starts “at scale” by creating a symbol of all citizens facing a Monster Problem that people care about deeply, and reaching shared conclusions. Then this small group presents their unified viewpoint back to an audience, hopefully everyone, as a reflection of what We (all) are thinking. This larger audience, who might be physically present or watching from home online or in other settings like social media, podcasts, and town halls, can talk over the conclusions in small groups.
Naturally since each Wisdom Council is randomly selected and they reach shared conclusions ... the larger audience generally resonates. People often respond something like “Yes, of course! this is the Truth about what's going on and what we need to do." It's building a shared perspective as we ensure that the conversation is inclusive, actively seeking the involvement of marginalized groups and providing expanding opportunities for everyone to participate. Anyone who hears about the Wisdom Council conclusions and comments to a friend, even remarking “well, this is stupid,” is already in the conversation. And welcome. That’s what we want … everyone to gradually accept their ownership of these Monster Problems and to feel a new level of empowerment and trust in resolving them.
This change model is focused on creating the kind of conversation we all want to be in ...heartfelt, creative and collaborative where everyone rises to the occasion, and where unified conclusions are the only possible result. We call this kind of conversation "choice-creating," as distinct from decision-making or problem-solving.
Each month there will be a new Wisdom Council speaking to a larger audience. And, if there is a crisis ... like a pandemic, war or AI development …this is a place for people to step back, talk respectfully and form a strategy that is collectively powerful and intelligent. The caliber of the conversation is the magic sauce to getting everyone involved.. It has to be choice-creating.
Probably only a small portion of people will be involved in the first cycle of the conversation ... those in the Wisdom Council, the f-t-f audience, the broadcast audience, the social media audience and people checking in asynchronously. But each month there will be a new Wisdom Council speaking on some HOT issue. And the audience will be bigger. Especially, if there is a crisis … like a pandemic or war or autocratic coup …here's how people can process it with others in a respectful supportive way.
So this process doesn’t “scale up” so much as it "fills in." It starts with a symbol of all the people and gradually “fills in” as the great diversity of people take an interest.
